Located at the south end of the glacier Vatnajokull, Jokulsarlon is a large glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland. It is the best known glacial lakes in Iceland and is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. Covering an area of approximately 18 square kilometers, Jokulsarlon is the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is also the deepest lake in the country approaching a depth of 250 meters.
Jokulsarlon started to form in 1934-1935 and grew to 7.9 square kilometers in 1975. Today, the lake covers more than 18 square kilometers. The growth of the lake is due to the heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. The size of the lagoon has increased fourfold since the 1970s. The lake is separated from the sea by only a short distance and it may eventually be transformed into an inlet of the sea if it keeps expanding like this.

Located in Vatnaj�kull National Park in Northeast Iceland, Dettifoss is Iceland�s greatest and most majestic waterfall. It is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe based on its magnitude. The falls are 100 meters (330 ft) wide and have a drop of 45 meters (150 ft) down to the Jokulsargljufur canyon.
Dettifoss is the largest waterfall in Europe in terms of volume discharge, having an average water flow of 193 cubic meters per second. During floods the water flow reaches up to 600 cubic meters per second. The force of the waterfall is such that the bedrock trembles when hit by the weight of an immense column of white-foaming water.
Dettifoss is situated on the glacial river J�kuls� � Fj�llum, which emerges from beneath Vatnaj�kull glacier collecting water from a large area in Northeast Iceland and runs into �xarfj�r�ur bay. Dettifoss is the center fall in a unique series of waterfalls. About one kilometer up the river to the south is a 10 meter high waterfall called Selfoss. And about two kilometers down the river to the north is the Hafragilsfoss which is a 27 meter high waterfall.
Dettifoss is possible to reach the waterfalls from both sides of the glacial river Jokulsa. However, on the west bank there are no facilities and the view on the beautiful waterfall is somewhat hindered by the waterfall's spray. On the east bank there is an information panel maintained by the staff of Vatnaj�kull National Park and a maintained track to the best viewpoints.
